Moving Wine and Transporting Wine with your Household Goods

VIP Transport has been transporting wine collections for over 25 years.  We also provide a cost effective service for transporting your wine with your household goods.  We pride ourselves in taking every precaution necessary for the preservation of your wine.  We are knowledgeable in the the proper packing of wine and are equipped with climate-controlled vehicles to preserve your collection.  VIP adheres to the following guidelines set forth by the research of wine experts on how to transport wine properly.

  • Wine should be transported between 55-65 degrees:  Maintaining the proper temperature is by far the most critical factor in wine transportation.  It is crucial that wine collections are hauled in climatic vans so that temperature and humidity levels can be controlled.  Not only does excessive heat cause the wine to expand and push the cork out, but it can also spoil the wine.  A few minutes in 90 degree weather alone can ruin an entire wine collection.  Heat can also dry the outside of the cork, allowing air to leak inside the wine bottle.  This exposure to oxygen causes immediate aging, and can leave your wine tasting like vinegar.
  • The wines temperature should not fluctuate more than 5 degrees:  Temperature fluctuation is also an important factor that must be taken into consideration when transporting wine.  Acceptable fluctuation for wine is about 5 degrees.  As wine heats up and expands , and then cools and contracts, it draws air into the bottle.  Wine bottles that have undergone repeated temperature cycling tend to lose their freshness.
  • The relative humidity level should be between 50 and 80 percent in transit:  Humidity is another factor that must be controlled when transporting wine.  Conditions that are under 50 percent relative humidity can be damaging to wine.  Excessive humidity causes the cork to dry out and shrink, loosening the cork and bringing the air closer to the wine.  Wine that is exposed to relative humidity levels over 80 percent for long periods of time can develop severe mildew.
  • Ideal temperature for storing wine 55 degrees with a relative humidity level of 70 percent:  Wine not only needs to be transported in ideal conditions, it also needs to be stored in these same conditions.  VIP Transports Corona, California warehouse is equipped with a full climatic-controlled facility for the storage and preservation of your wine.  The facilities temperature and humidity levels are controlled to ensure the freshness of your wine.
  • Prevent excessive shaking:  VIP Transport’s climate vehicles are equipped with air-ride systems; preventing excessive shaking.  Although the wine is exposed to some shaking during its transportation, the amount is minimal. The vibrations may cause the sediments of the wine to be stirred up, but it is not damaging to the wine. We recommend that you lay your wine in a quiet area for a couple of weeks after delivery.
  • Moving wine with your household goods:  Our customers can save money by transporting wine and wine collections with your household goods shipment.  As one of the largest Mayflower Transit agents, we have the abilty to provide full service household goods relocation with transporting your wine in our climatic vans.
